Not sure whether this belongs in the OM or Art Talk forum, but just thought i'd post to ask your opinion...

I just checked my Guest Book and noticed the following entry:

Comments: You really have talent, too bad it's wasted on anime. I think that, before you start trying to draw "sexy" characters like Nikki, you should check an anatomy book. Nikki is probably the worst shaped character I've seen in a while, and I'm not talking about her breasts. From the hips down, it seems like her body has been scaled to a bigger size while ignoring the rest of the body. The hair is laughable, and that face is hideous. The rave poster you did, I don't know why you specifically had to have nudity, but the breasts are very much lopsided and very plastic looking. Like I said, you have talent, so drop the anime and pick up your own style and an anatomy book.

Do you think this is a reasonable guest message giving helpful advice or simply someone slating my stuff? I was gonna delete it but dont wanna seem like I cant take critisism.
Cheers

I think you should email the guy and ask him if he's an anatomy book salesman.

Hmm... to be honest I think it's kind of a light flame towards your work. The way you draw "Nikki" was drawn in that style that suits the idea you wanted it to be viewed.

In anime often expressions are jerked or showed out in a more creative eye looking way not always in realism.. Come on just look at that picture, a girl tired/bored, and just lying around looking sexy fixing up her semi-bad morning hair with an interesting pose expression lit on her face.

The anatomy remark didn't make too much since, I think that was a bad judgment. Because if he saw your Nikki Christmas Pic or a few several others. You can clearly see that the bodies are drawn in correct normal proportions with a beautiful face in my opinion.

For the rave picture comment.. if you study this hard in logic, why not in a sense give it a bit of flash after all rave/techno music makes you think "lights and fantasy".

Hmmm, you have nothing to worry about. I think it's just someone who doesn't like anime, and wants people to draw pictures he likes. So he flames anything stylistic about the art (the long legs, anime hair style, the typical faces, and whatnot), while people that do like anime (like us XD) have no problems with it.
So yeah, he strikes me as someone with the prejudice that all anime is crap.

I'm not saying that all of your pictures are perfect and can't be improved any further (I don't think there is any artist like that ), but what that guy is saying shouldn't bring you down.

Hmm lets see here...... Bomu first off i think that you have a great talent! Your compositions and handling of color is great approaching amazing!! Looking at your work you can see your improvements as time progresses!
However i think that your guest has a small point. However i believe that he could have approached it better. I also believe that he is one of these militant anime hating idiots out there.
His only point is in the fact that your anatomy is not perfect.... its not horrible is good but not perfect, meaning that i think you have some difficulties with some poses and that can be overcome with more mileage and drawing more diverse things and angles.
I think too that his point addresses the fact that some people think that bad drawing is "style".
that is to say that "oh my characters face is lop-sided because thats my style and not that im just lazy. Unfortunately newbies to the anime style think that you can throw anatomy out the window, but you and i know that aint true its apparent in your work!!
My advice is keep up your great work, keep that post around just to give you a kick when you need it. Show that asshole what you really got in store for him!!!
-Cheers!

Lol Slumdog! That's what I first thought, so I visited his website and realised this guy really knows what he's talking about! I mean, just check out some of his stuff- it really puts mine to shame http://www.geocities.com/bulletunic/Explosion.jpg

But yeah, Im my own worst critic and although I can see some of my stuff could use a lot of tweaking, it still gets me down when it seems like people just start picking holes in everything I've done in the past just for the sake of it Im gonna try practicing more this year since last year's been like the worst as far as my arty stuff goes and I really need to pull back before everyone else on the board over takes me- Altho half of you already have!

Hey even if his work is cool, he shouldn't be saying that, none of that was constructive, It would more likely put you off drawing for a while. This guys ego must be huge!!!

I've seen that kind of "criticism" on other (well-respected) artists' guestbooks as well. It really pisses me off, when you see good artists put so much effort into their work, and have some random guy, needlessly, tear it apart.

"wasted on anime" ? aiya, another anime hater.

Don't worry bout that crap dude!! keep doin what you do.

just remember that whenever anyone gives a critism it is always a point of view. critism is always good but you just got to be able to take it the right way and know how to disregard the wrong type of critism.

for example if you did a piece which you wanted to be realistic and someone said that this part could be done better to make it so then you should take it to heart.

but if you did a piece you wanted to be stylistic and someone said that a certain part could be done better to make it look more realistic then you'd prob ignore that cos realism wasn't what you were aiming for.

back to the issue in hand, the guy coulda bin less patronising about the way he critisised, but differences is what make the world go around.

The guys a straight tosser. Dont take his views to heart Bomu. Nothing wrong with the way you draw.

The gap between stylistic and realistic proportion is hard to see if you dont know what youre looking at, or what the artist intended with his pic. Nobodies anime anatomy is perfect and sometimes thats part of its charm. Just ignore him. Sounds to me like hes slagging you off...

dont pay him no attention, he is just another anime hater, his art IMO does not make him the God of anatomy so he really should have put his criticism in a more constructive manner.
