I've never gotten into any particular anthro art-type story, so I guess I've never been in a position to be bothered much either way. don't really love it, don't really hate it either. not my sorta thing, I guess. I really don't know anything about it, at all...

Sorry Neo, I have never liked anthros. If there was an anthro character in an anime I would dislike him/her. Dunno why, don't hit me!

'NEO raises comedy squeaky hammer to strike Dan, but takes pity and puts it away in NEO's funky clown pants'

I get the impression nobody likes it much, but I also get the impression it's not bothering anybody either. I dont like getting on folks nerves or makin them uneasy. I am a normal guy with normal appetites, so it bothers me to think that im makin folks uncomfortable.

This is an art board though, and I am here to get input just like the rest of you. Just because I post a lot, it doesnt mean it's self promotional. I just draw a lot and im a Leo, so I like to share.

I would like some input on the Xenon chara, if nobody minds. He's the main baddie from my new story. Thankyou. He's not an anthro, he's a machine. Not too sure about the design.....

I had hoped that this topic would have got more attention. Not to glorify me and my art, just to see what the REAL people on here think.

Nevermind eh ?. If anyone wants to hijack this topic and talk about somethin else philisopical, existential or otherwise smarty arty then feel free.

Damn! Sorry man, I had some matters to attend to, and just noticed this one! (Hehe, I'm becoming quite a regular on your threads neo - do i get some kind of award? [jokes] )

Nah man, nothing wrong with your anthros. Hell, I even borrowed one (well, the mistress anyway...) and CGed it. It'd be unfair to say you weren't diversifying, because it's clear from some of your other posts that you are. But try and draw as much human, mecha etc. as well as anthros (still, I'm one to talk - i can only draw humans so far ). To use a much-used cliché, keep up the good work.

Just one thing: Could you post up your drawings as new topics, rather than replies? Makes it easier to run through your threads.

Hey neo, it's great to see you so active, and post updates in your thread. I like to check it everytime I come onto the board. I wish I had your motivation to practice and draw

Anyway I admit that I'm not a huge fan of anthro art, but I have nothing against it either. But I think some people might be a bit turned off by anthro art in general because usually the characters look a bit young. This is probably the result of "merging" a cute animal with a regular girl/boy. And when you have females that look sorta underaged in seductive poses and stuff, it might be a bit uncomfortable for people in that sense :/ But that's just my own whacky opinion.

But I think, in the end, just draw what you want. You aint doing art for other people, you should be doing it for yourself. Dunno, if done right, I'm sure anthro art can be very attractive to all audiences.

bleh I'm ranting on again, just wanted to say I hope I didn't offend you or anything neo! Just wanted to add to the interesting discussion.

I completely agree with you, problem is practically ALL anime art looks underage. It comes with the style.

Pearl's nineteen, and my youngest chara is 18 (Lily). I dont draw babies, I draw women. Thats not a flame Ayzie, it does sound that way tho.

Never realised they did look that underage ?. It wasnt a concious thing. Do my charas look underage ?, id really like replies to this now. Youve got we wondering.

Hmmm... I guess they look slightly underage, but it's nothing unsolvable, besides which, if they are as old as you said they were, then they look fine for that age.
If you want to make em look older, just lengthen the face slightly -
short faces = child, long faces = adult. Try and strike something in between.
Additionally, for the 2 charas u mentioned, they will have just hit adulthood, so draw them as adults, but possibly with a hint of child in them (if that makes sense )

I really did have no idea that anthro art is so disturbing to most people. Its no more odd to me than fancying alien girls in your fave sci-fi. Still, I am insane so maybe thats odd to people too.

Hey Neo, you shouldn't be ashamed with ya anthro stuff (sorry if this reply is late, having troubles getting online) When I hear the name Neo I no longer think of a very popular film character, I now think of hairy chicks with pointy ears lol hats of to ya bud

neo> Yah I agree! Now that I think about it, a lot of females in classic anime art look a bit underaged. The manga " I"s " comes to mind, though I loved it to bits, you can't help but see that the female characters look a bit cutesy. As do many females in other animes/mangas.

I should take the word underaged back (and a lot of what I said before), I'm sorry!! I didn't mean to call anthro characters underaged as in, "little girls" at all, but rather, I think the more realistic term for anthro art would be cartoony or cute. Although there's absolutely nothing wrong with a cartoony or cute style. Great Animes/Mangas like those by CLAMP (CardCaptor Sakura, Angelic Layer, Chobits), are all evenly based on the classic cute anime style. But then, there are also animes/mangas that stray away from the "traditional" or "stereotypical" anime style to more refined, or realistic looks ( Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, Ghost in the Shell, and the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs).

A lot of anime artists break away from the stereotype, and that's what keeps the genre interesting and fresh. Unfortunately it seems that many North Americans are only exposed to the former kind of anime, which is probably one of the reasons for the many "anime hate groups" that exist. BUT that's another rant

I guess in the end, I'm just ranting about variety. The problem I think is that, a majority of anthro characters out there, only fall under the category of being cartoony or cute. With that, I guess viewers have become, not uncomfortable (which is another word I'd like to take back :]), but less interested in furry art in general.

Bleh, but then everything boils down to personal taste. I don't really like giving crits based on a matter of taste or personal preference, although I'm hardly qualified to critique or give comments at all anyway :]

I think you took that as a flame Ayzie. This is just a discussion, Im not mad or unhappy with anyone on here so don't go thinkin that, just wanted to know your opinions.

Like I said before, I just don't like force feeding people art that disturbs them, so I wanted to know how good(or how bad) peoples reaction to it was, simple as.

Thanks for all your opinions, I don't feel so bad about posting it now. I wouldn't mind keeping this topic going for a while longer, so everyone can have their say...

Dan, they're not hairy . They have skin. As for my nickname, it was never off the Matrix. I used to play PSO and the V2 one, throughout my time on there I was a char called NEOVIPER, but folks just called me NEO. It stuck. Apart from when I was DELBOY a robot guy but he never got past LVL40.

I feel kinda cheap, cos Ayzie made a five star comment on this topic above this drivel Im writing. I agree with what you've said Ayzie, and the odd thing is, I detest the cutesy animes to be honest. Gimme Bebop anyday.

While we're on the subject of Bebop, who's your fave chara on it ?. I'd like to say Spike, but Jet's my fave. I just find him more interesting than Spike, not to say that Spike isn't cool, he's one of the best damn charas in anime. Second though, I'd have to say Ein, how can anybody not love that cute dawg ?

Mmm! Don't worry dude, I didn't take anything as a flame, I just wanted to clear up some of the odd things I was yaking about earlier, which I now think was a bit inappropriate.

Bebop rules so much, easily one of my fav animes. Spike was cool, though I thought he was a bit selfish the way he acted in the end heheh. My fav character has to be Ed though!
