The decline of our society goes on as faceless commercial enterprises and their similarly souless idea of entertainment and music creeps further and further into our lives. Endless shit films about when some slag met two blokes...blah blah blah....Endless tv shows glorifying being a drunken piss-head and characters who are either unlikable or stereotyped to death. Music has either become yo yo yo rap bollocks, garage shite or inept looking 13 year olds crooning and murdering a song sung so much better years earlier. Then theres rap metal which is more or less the same thing again and again but isnt as shit as most.

What is NEO moaning about now?.....Where the hell has the good stuff gone. Bring back shows like transformers and married with children not endless politically correct, rude or disgusting just for the sake of it, comedies which are about as funny as pile surgery. Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps springs to mind, and that Time gentlemen please. Ok so not all the old stuff was good but theres no good stuff now really. Just endless pretty boys all over tv with their spikey David Beckam rip off hair. And for gods sake, will someone please force Posh to let him pick his own friggin outfits the poor girly voiced bastard. She is one mad cow.

What this topic is about more than anything, is the fact that the tv is the new god. It tells us what to wear, what to watch, where to go, what to think. Theres a Bebop episode that fits in with this topic. Tv is the new religion and that is so wrong.

Most people have lost the ability to think for themselves and with each new generation that ability will be more and more replaced by tv's brainwashing effects. Artistic, creative people are more than likely the last of the freethinkers, we tend to live in our own way, with our own rules not by rules established in Smash hits magazine or some such celebrity glorification rag, thats why society finds it hard to accept us as individuals, making us change or tone down what makes us what we are.

These are just the ramblings of a man who misses the good music, the good tv, the classic films, the good heroes, this is the kind of thing me and my mates talk about, we all miss the good old days. Feel free second guess me, as this is just one persons viewpoint, one persons opinion.

More than anything this was my attempt to start a good discussion on the OM forum.

I do realise that this is one long set of sweeping generalisations, but from my viewpoint they are true.

It's kinda true in a way, but you're not defending your point very well Tv has become god, and for an example what /was/ good, you come up with more tv
Married with children was a good show, but its characters were actually far from likable (which was of course what made the show such a good laugh).
Still, I know what you mean, but I don't mind as much anymore (I used to get very irritated ;p). TV and commercial radio stations won't stand in my way to listen and make the music I like

I just meant that tv has become decision maker for most, I didnt word it very well. Yeah, I am kind of easy with it nowadays, I just don't watch it. I like to moan about it though, kinda like shakin the shitty tree and hoping for the best in the future.

Theres plenty of good things about the old days. Good music by really talented people who could sing without a studio and who werent necessarily good looking or well presented, It was all about the music, baby. No fucking moron second childhood teenage presenters with the IQ of a walnut whip like those two thick fucks on Trailer Park. Good old offensive humour. Oh, I give up, I cant think of anything more. You get the picture.

I dream of a day when George Michael and Elton John, Eric Clapton, Freddy Mercury, Elvis are more popular with kids than Gareth Gates and these factory made pretty boy groups who are all SOOOO FUCKING CAMP it gives gay people a bad name. Or those talentless rapper dickheads who think a song should contain the word 'Yo' ten billion friggin times.

BRING ON THE REVOLUTION.

I apologise for this topic before I'm flamed. I'm currently suffering from insomnia and have been awake for 30 odd hours now I think. Had the day off work cos I feel so wired and a little paranoid. Logic is not my closest friend right now if you know what I mean....Seemed like a good idea to start this topic at the moment but after a nap I will cringe lol

Hey, is there room for the ORIGINAL Guns N Roses (Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff and Stevie Adler) and Queen (I kno u mentioned Freddy Mercury, but we can't forget the rest) in that list?
Oh yeh, Gareth Gates and his crappy hair and fuck off and all. It's wankers like him and Shite Club 7 who are filling up the music scene with complete and utter wank crap (whatever that means... ). Let the musical revolution begin.

I have awakened after a mammoth two hour sleep and yes, I did cringe. Nevermind, let's see how far this topic will go.

Yes, there's Brian May, John Deacon..etc and oh yes, there is plenty of room for Guns N Roses, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, U2 and let's not forget good old fashioned thrash metal. There's too many bands to name off hand....

And I did like yummy Rachael from S Club and the white one with the fine tits.... they made 7's music more bearable.

I have to so disagree with you, it is the same as it was back then.
The difference is bad memories fade away sooner there where alot of bad movies back then aswell but noone remembers them anymore and that will happen to those that are bad now.

Same goes for the music only because you remember the top 1 for a month from 50years ago, doesnt mean that the other top 100 the whole year wherent filled only with stuff that was that good.
Also peoples taste is different and what you like might be shit in the eye of someone else (and personaly I think rap is a very creative music style).

Personaly I think that our present isnt much different from our past and wont change much in the future.
At least on a large scale sure little details might change.
But even when it would change much :

It is said that what is called "the spirit of an age' ' is a thing to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. In the same way, a single year does not have just spring or summer. A single day, too, is the same.
For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation. This is the mistake of people who are attached to past generations. They have no understanding of this point.
On the other hand, people who only know the disposition of the present day and dislike the ways of the past are too lax.

All the great music is in the past. The beatles, Elvis etc. Beat box stuff and certain diva style R+B is creative, like Craig David who does some cool music, but rap and R+B is largely is bullshit. Some big black guy, rapping about how many birds he's shagged and lines he's done, inbetween going yo twenty billion times. If thats creative, then I'm an eco terrorist.

Thats not racism, it usually is a big black guy.

Dont take this as an insult G-Man. That wasnt a personal attack, just my thoughts on rap.

well i must give you all a standing ovation for everything that has been said( i do so). And being that i came into this mostly nuetral i see both side's of the arguement. So i must voice my oppinion. Well firstI must admit i like some rap, i don't know why i just do. But then again there is alot that i think isn't worth pissing on to put out a fire. I also think that some of the greatest music has been lost. A few were named, but just to add to it journey, led zeplin, the eagles, my mind just went blank. But i don't need to say anymore.

I also must make my own point it this. Along with all the shit tv there is out there i think it has de-senseitised society. I mean look at the tv. everytime you turn it on all it is is sex. don't get me wrong i like it just as much as the next guy, but sex humor get's old. And violence is everywhere now. this isn't the media's fault, i mean there tv is more violent than ours ans there's less crime, i'm speaking from america, i don't know about anywhere else.

Now to argue for the other side you can't blame tv, music, and whatever else for everything. if you do that you are who you hate. like when the first school shooting happened in kentucky. No one and nothing was blamed, the kids just did it. But when columbine happened it was all because of the music and shit. now come on who god damn stupid do you haev to be to take that stuff seriously ? fuck, come on manson told him to do it? I listen to manson and i'm just fine. I don't feel the need to wear black, or act morbid or anything like that. But still it was blamed because the parent's, the school, and society needed someone to blame it on. So don't blame it all on the music, ect:. Should some blame be dealt there? yeah, but not all.

Yeah you're right, that is a serious load of bullshit. Tv and music cannot force you to do anything, you do it cos somewhere deep inside you're a sick twisted fuck who wants to shoot some poor kid for no reason. It's like the Jamie Bulger trial. They blamed Childs Play and got the film banned, where in that film did two kids lead a baby away from a shopping centre and brick him to death. They were just sick, evil little children, films were not to blame. They needed the death penalty, preferably by bricking.

It's also kinda like those sad fat bastards in America who filed a lawsuit against Burger King or something for making them fat. I forget the details, but nobody forced them to eat the damn things now did they ?. They're just weak, jelly ass, porkies. Where's your friggin willpower. Probably bouncing around in that balloon they call a belly. They were like 40 odd stone or something stupid, I mean shit, there's cars lighter than that surely. Shouldn't the alarm bells have started ringing when they lost sight of their feet because of the titanic gut ?. Im a nice guy, but Jesus, show some backbone.

Did Manson have to apologise, release a statement or something for that, even though it wasn't his fault ?

As for tv and films not doing your psychology any damage, I was watching Hellraiser and serious banned horror shit at the age of six, and look at me, I'm just fine............ Now wheres my damn chainsaw got to ???.... Im always leaving it imbedded in some poor teenager......I'd forget my hockey mask if it weren't strapped to my face.......

I suppose you'll have to do.....lol

DARKEST NIGHT
Come dead of night, and t'is darkness unbound. Leaving only mere shadows of light to guide the traveler in his perilous journey, along the path of a shadowed world. Night's touch disguises and diffuses his path with a suffocating black. Into his darkest night he wanders, unwitting and scared of the shapes on the wall, some serrated, angular and ten feet tall. To the realm of terror, within his own mortal shell. Fear claws at his mind, like a ravenous beast, his heart hammers, he stumbles over his feet. Half seen things cause him a fright, existing in both his mind and in the shadows of night. Are they real, or are they illusions ?, He'll soon know when they come to take him. Into the darkness they call their home. Away from all he knows. To the realm of no return. Another traveler lost to the world, the still night is deaf to his screams. The moon looks on, up above she beams.

Just a random Poemy thing I thought of as I sit here bored out of MY TINY MIND......

ha, i have got to say it's all good still. But the law suit was against mcdonalds. And i totally agree with you neo. If your to god damn lazy to go do something beside's eat, then you should be shot. Come on you fat ass go for a walk, or maybe just walk down the street. And do you remember when mcy'ds had that law suit against them beacuse the coffee was to hot? now this just pisses me off royaly. How the hell is coffee supposed to be served, luke warm? Come on, how stupid do you have to be? You know who should be shot in both those cases the most? of course you do, the judges. Now these guys must be thicker than a nukeuler sub to let the people win the case's. I mean really if a person can sue these guys for something retarded like that and win, then i can sue paramount picture's because i didn't like that one movie.......

And with the manson thing, he did apoligize for it, even when he also stated it wasn't his fault. Hell he even offered to hold a concert near there and give all the money to the famlies, they said no. so he took all the money from a different concert and offered, they still denied him. I almost can see why if it could be linked to him, but it can't. If you ask me, it's because the parent's never talked or anything to them, because the school didn't do anything about them alway's getting picked on( and don't get me wrong i get picked on, but i'm not gonna do something pointless like this), And last becasue the kids felt sorry for themselve's because they knew the weren't going to amount to shit. But that's their own fault.

And finally back to the topic. I know most of it has been said by now, and alot of anger has been let out. But it's not over, you still have to have passion for this topic. So tell me what you think is leading to our society becoming a shit life? Is it because fo the de-sensitiseing? is it because of people that are allowed to sue company's for reasons that should have been laughed out a long time ago? Is it because of all the big companie's? Is it everything? or is it something else? i need answers from you guy's.

I think peoples attitude, lack of respect for society as a whole, and the complete lack of any kind of spirituality in daily life is the problem. We no longer respect each other, and strangers are quite happy to walk all over another stranger to get what they want without thinking about how it might make them feel, how it might affect them in their life. Nowadays kids quite happily throw empty cans, crisp packets on the floor in plain sight of their parents who don't care and do nothing. They also swear openly in front of their parents, telling them to fuck off without much reprisal. There is no structure, or order to their lives, and they grow up to just become a reflection of the behavior they were shown in their childhood. It's like these nobheads with these huge car stereos. Dead of night, about 3.00am you hear BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM for about ten mins till the silly fuck turns it off. A blatant disregard for his neighbourhood and the sleepers. I want to put a fucking golf club to all those fucking stereos and their owners. And to any stupid prick who thinks that playing his decks at night with max bass is a good idea. Respect is the cornerstone of a healthy society, respecting ourselves and others means we care about more than just ourselves. We want everybody to have a sembelance of a good life and a good environment. Instead almost every young person thinks screw the world and everything in it. Im going to get my fun, fuck everyone else. That attitude is WRONG. Animals in the zoo, get more consideration towards a comfortable environment than we do. It's the fault of tv for showing us lies of what life should be, it's the fault of the government for not caring about society and lining their own filthy pockets, it's the fault of the select few fatcats who put money above life. Money is the root of misery and despair. It's evil.

*continued from previous post*

Im not deeply religious by the way. Despite being a Christian I don't believe in any form of religion as such. I just cling to the fact that there is one god (of some sort, hopefully) and a heaven (to make up for this fuck ugly journey through life). I also like to believe there's a hell so evil arseholes like Saddam and Hitler can burn in agony for all eternity. If there is no hell, then these fuckers get off scot free and just turn to dust. I want them to suffer.

Religion is an honour code of sorts. When men used to fear the reprisal of a diety of some sort, they moderated their behaviour accordingly, nowadays even most faithful don't really believe what they're doing, in the back of their minds there's a little voice saying 'this is all bollocks'. Religion also creates a sense of brotherhood, a feeling of togetherness. A unified collective who are much more prone to care about their fellow man. That sense of community is missing in everyday life now, a feeling you're walking a path into the arms of eternal bliss surrounded by those who think as you do.

On the other hand, Religion has caused more death and destruction than both world wars combined. Maybe it makes people feel TOO together, and it's also in a limited sense, a form of mass mind control.

God, I feel old now and I'm only 24.....I feel like some moaning old git harping on about how he fought as a soldier in world war 2, but he was really a cook...

damn i love this. But i must say neo i agree with you completely. I have met so many little like 5th-7th grade kids that treat me like shit. I mean fuck kid i'm not your bitch, go talk about how you have sex with highschooler's somewhere else. And this really hurts me to see that kida are like this. I mean what the hell is the future gonna be like with these idiots running things? Hell i'm even scared. But what can you do? If you ask me i think they need the shit beat out of them, by someone like.....ME. And so should there parents for letting their kids do shit like this. I know what neo means when he talked about feeling old. But i do to, i mean when you deal with kids like these, you just do because there so damn immature. I can't imagine what their teachers put up with, maybe beating's should be allowd by teachers.....

And I believe religion can be good. But religion has a way of turning it's way's around fast. like when the church ruled it is considered the worst point in history, maybe that's why they call it the dark age's.... But along with what you said people get so into their religion they think every other religion is false, and there's no way any other religion is right. Even if they belive in the same person. And then there are those churchs that use people. Like there is one on the outskirts of this town. And to be a member you have to, give then 1/3 of your paycheck, if you have more than 2 vehicles you have to sell all but 2 and give the money to the church, and alot of other bullshit. And this is bad on people. I know a guy that used to go there. And now he thinks god talks to him. He wrote this book that's like (lllll) thick of stuff god said to him. So i don't go to church i see what has happened to people. Not only him but actually since my dad started going he has become more violent, and i was alway's the kid that sat there when they had this like thing that teenagers went to and talked about god and the way he works i sat kinda off to the side and listened to the babble of fools. then when i voiced my oppionin they just glared at me. And the only one who would listen to what i was saying was the one that was teaching because he had an open enough mind to think that what that specific religion said may be wrong. And not only that but everywhere at church you see like clicks of people, and that's pathetic, especially for a church. Yes church can do good, but it has showed to do more harm than good.

I'm not exactly big on religion either. I agree, it has the power to do some good, but most of the time (dangerous assumption coming up - PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong) it seems to cause so much shite on this planet. The problem is, none of these religious zealot types can admit that their religion is just as good as any other. You also got the fact that, like it or lump it, each religion IS fighting for followers in the way they go 'I'm right, the other's wrong'. That's why Buddhism, to me, seems to be the best, because it preaches tolerance of other religions and peace. You don't get anything that says 'Buddhism is right. Everything else is wrong'. Instead, it preaches tolerance of other religions, and accommodating them. I'm not actually a Buddhist myself, because I could never discipline myself to follow it, but I have a great admiration for it.

me? i'm only 16, suprised?

I'm glad everyone is agreeing on stuff here. and it isn't all like, i'm right your wrong. And i agree with whoever said it(sorry i can't remember who did) that the problem with religion is that people try to run it. They try to prove that there right and everyone else is wrong. Which as i see it, and correct me if i'm wrong, completely destroys the purpose of religion. Religion is based on faith, faith is beliving in something even without proof. Now if you try and prove, and can prove that your religion is right, then there is no faith, right? Damn i'm good, untill someone can prove me wrong. But don't get me wrong if you believe in a religion go for it.

It's all cool. I see what you're getting at. Faith is more an emotional than concrete thing, more subjective than objective. Trying to prove it right is an impossibility - you can't, because you only have someone else's word for it. Unless you have the concrete proof, then you can't be certain. Which goes back to the topic of 'what is the truth, anyway?'...
