Yep dont get yourself down there,
actually drawing in different styles will help you developing one of your own.

And you can still draw manga style in your sparetime, no one will stop you.

thats nice to hear but from wat my fellow drawers in my town say is that for the are class there is a restriction to creativity u pretty much have to trace wat ever she tells u to draw so in other words i learn how to be a photo copier"will that be on both side?" lol but really i don't care wat she thinks i can draw acutal portaties and stuff it's just i find manga style a whole lot more fun so I will start a revalution!!!! lol

Sounds harsh to call manga "big eyed doodles", but some teachers are like that. Mine never really encouraged me to pursue manga, but they never restricted me from drawing it either. This may be due to the fact I would back up my manga art with lots of research and preparation work? So perhaps if you wanna do manga, show your teacher that you've researched the origins of manga and explain why it works opposed to just presenting a finished manga style picture.
And drawing other styles can be fun too! And if you have to compromise, there's always the option of drawing typical manga themes in traditional western styles.
