Rendering means to use light and shadows, to give the drawing 3dimensionality.Overall your drawing isnt bad. A few things I picked up in Artclass that might help first. Start light(dont press so hard with the pencil) and dont try to nail the lines on the paper in the beginning. Instead focus on the form and proportion. Dont use erasures!!! (atleast not when you are scetching, only use them to clean up your work when you're finished.) use helplines (they help ). And remember that over 80% of drawing is observation.
For your drawing.
The first thing that I recognized is the asimetry of her chin (remember helplines). Than comes the shoulder section. Main problem here, is the space between the top of the shoulders and the point where the arms are connected to the body (it should be wider than the arm is thick). Also her right shoulder( ) is higher than the left. Next the the upper arm is to short (should allmost reach the belly button). And the lower arm looks pretty beefy. Now that might looks like alot of errors, but these are rather small/common mistakes, that you can avoid by using helplines and observation of realpeople. And dont be afraid to use references when you draw. Photos for example, or yourself (you're human after all) to see if a pose is even remotly possible, or to see how long certain parts are in comparsion with others (I'll do this too). Hope that helps a bit and keep up the work I'm sure you will improve over time.

yup pretty much have to critic the same stuff AKATT had said.I give you an overdraw and write a bit more. Should be online in a hour or two. Ok here is the overdraw Lets see I will focus mainly on the face, 'couse it is the thing people often look first at. And we had the same subject today in my portrait drawing class (so I might manage to tell correct things ). The most important(and first) helpline when drawing the face, is the orange one(in her face). This line runs directly trough the middle of the face, splitting it into equal halfs. So all things on one half should be nearly the same on the other side.
That is also your main error here, her mouth aswell as her chin are to far of to the right( ). The eyes should be equal far away from this line, which you placed perfectly (concrats thats one of the most important thing). The nose is put in the right place aswell, also concrats. The second helpline is the green one. Which ones again splits the face into halfs. The main use of this line is, to assist in drawing the eyes.
You got that pretty much right again so we skip that part. The last line in the face is also a usefull one. It splits the part from the green line (our second helpline) and chin into another half. Normaly the line marks where the nose ends. And you catched that. well done again.
On the shoulders. Well important is, that the space of the shoulder (marked with orange) is wider than the arm (blue line).
The purple part is not that important, but observe the way I drawed the lower arm. Ok thats basicly a short rundown on help lines. A good way to start would be looking at other peoples drawing (prefered pro stuff) and imagine the helplines over it. See how everything falls into the right place in those pictures. Also look at photographs and do the same. [ 25-09-2002: Message edited by: G.i.A.m. ]
