look i'm working on something right now it is a story in which people are born with spirits. these spirits are guardians of their masters. they take the form of a creature each have different strengths and abilities wich get stronger as they grow older. if the spirit or master die the other wanders the land restlessly in sadnes some move on and accept it others don't. anyway the fact is i want to make up what the creatures look like because i dont want them to look like ones of this world. and like writers get writers bloc i've got ideas bloc. so if any of you guys have got any ideas ........cheers!in advance.

well thats a toughie, really it is. I am thinking maybe something like the dragons on Final fantasy: The Spirits within, or something like that.

Sounds like a cool idea Mike. But yeah, gottas be careful you dont accidentally end up copying anyone else's ideas.
What you're doing sounds similar to the Guadians in the FF series and Stands from JoJo's Bizzare adventure as well as Digimon (monsters instead of spirits/unearthly beings) - maybe take a look at those anime/games etc for ideas and also if you want them to look animal like, just get out a book on Jungle animals or Insects or something and base designs on those - that's what people like Masamune Shirow does to create his cool bug-like mechas etc

Well if the spirit guardians have elemental powers then it wouldn't be as hard. Example A spirit that has shadow magic could look like a big dark spider, a spirit that has earth powers could look like a big mole or a huge boulder with thin arms but big hands and long legs. - good luck

Bomu has a very good point. The whole "spirit thing" is kind of chipping off the block of all those pokemon spin off games and anime series like digimon, golden sun, final fantasy, ogre battle 64, transformers Armada, Monster Rancher, card capture that anime i think. It does sound cool but just remember not to apply the basic spirit or small partners with strong magic help out their friends idea.

sounds like a cool idea! =] you just have to be creative! dont look at anyone else creatures or what-not, becuase then it wouldnt be original and everyone would say youre copying
but if you really want inspiration. . reality is stranger than fiction! go to your library or barnes and nobles sometime and look at animal books - theyre are some strange animals! hopefully that'll help you - so that your creatures dont look like cats and dogs
