After much dithering and muckin about, Ive finally decided to make up a story containin my two favourite things. Anthros and mecha. Here is the MERCURY9, middleweight class, standard workhorse mech for the Southern Militia (good guys). Yep those are wheels on it's legs, as seen on Transformers, Heavy Gear and many western mecha franchises. It sinks down onto them and can get up to about 60 - 70 mph. The baddies however use Anti Grav style skimmer mecha with fold out spider legs.

Anyway, enough blarb, you'll see the finished article when it's in progress.

This is a freehand biro drawin, so it's mega scruffy but I think you can make it all out okay. Input is VERY much wanted and appreciated. I want to know the design is sound enough.

I ain't exactly the expert on mechas (my speciality is humans), so u may want to talk to someone who has better understanding of this. But, I'll give this my best shot...
As a basic design, it looks quite good, but maybe you might want to make it a bit less bulky, particularly around the legs. As I said, I ain't too sure, so talk to someone like Bomu or G.i.A.m. They're more likely to know about this than me. Hope that helps

This is western mecha, which is slang for bulky, ugly but functional. The design is as it should be for a middleweight gear. I really wanted input on the design itself, not it's shape.

I appreciate the comments Angelo, dont take this as a sulky, nasty comment.

no worries, it's not a problem. At least you got a reason for making it so bulky. Like i said, make the shoulders less cubelike - try curving the outer edges.

I still think the mecha looks good, doesn't need much in the way of modification... BUT (theres always a but!) its quite detailed, so if you're gonna do a comic strip with em in you gotta remember you'll be drawing potentially hojillions of these guys! Mind you, if that was just a little doodley sketch, I don't think you have much to worry about!

More info, for anybody whos interested.

Five years ago, the Imperial fleet, against the idea of the colonial alliance gaining independance, moved the third fleet into Venria's orbit in an attempt to make the colonial forces fall into line with the empires will. This had entirely the opposite effect, the colonial militia began an open revolt against the empire. The colonial forces were entrenched and seemed to be in the position to hold off the empire indefinitely should they deploy their forces planetside.

From out of nowhere, imperial forces attacked Telis, the capital city, and the seat of the colonial government. Telis was a fortress of gun turrets and high end gears, it seemed like suicide. That was untill the empire dropped a type of mech never seen before from orbit. A collossus. A mech the size of a city, dropped in a thermal shell from orbit. None of the colonists thought such a machine was possible. The behemoth turns Telis into ash and the colonial governemnt folds. Cut off and split in twain, the colonial military, confused and isolated is quickly conquered.

Fortunately for the abused people of Venria, that wasnt the end of the story. Not all the colonial military folded in the wake of Telis. Attacking from secret bases, the colonial forces still fight their campaign against the imperial military.

Thats the basics. It's in a list form too, so the story above isnt organised as well as it will be. I know it's nothing new but it's in the story itself where the originality will be.

I like the design, only thing Im not to sure about are the wheels.
Somehow I get the feeling that the mech would fall over when it accelerates.
Other than this, well how big is it (read draw a human beside it as a comparsion) and how do you enter it.

The story sofar is a little bit on the standard side(not the first colonie that splits from the empire ).
But dont take that wrong, if it has some nice story twists and is well told it will rock(and im sure you manage this .

Oh and draw the mechs from the bad guys I shirow like spider mechs.

I scrapped the spider mech idea, as the colonial mecha would tear em to bit's in close combat. I made them runic, and knightly now, with banners and war standards like crusaders. All war storys are standardised. Not many ways to explain that two sides dont like each other and have a barney other than money, territory or a real persoanl dislike for one another.

Im currently workin on the baddies, but theyre all scribbles and not suitable for showing yet. And ive just had an art block too . Expect the final drafts before the end of this week. As for size, theyre about the size of a council house, not sure what that is in feet, not as large as the ones in mechwarrior.

Well see you allready named good reasons other than, colony wants to split from the founding country, country is against it base story.
Its just that there are alot other stories that use this base.
And why are the people in the colony allways the good guys( turning this around could allready make a story more interesting).

And without getting political when switching on the TV.
You can get a nice example how complicated and also interesting reasons for a war can be(as cruel as it is).

The Idea for Crusader like mechs is cool and suits empiral troops very well imho.

Looking forward to your further designs and ofcourse the story.

People always like the underdogs to be the good guys. I do too, but if asked why, I have no idea. Just seems right.

The other mech designs should be up by sunday, then Dekar can cg one. Sorry 4 the wait Dekar.

yeah, I guess everyone feels alittle bit like a underdog (and sifi/fantasy/anime... fans even more).
So people can relate to them.
Ofcourse you could make the empire the underdogs.

Must admit I came up with a way how it could happen while I walked the dog to day.

Imagine the Empire having strict laws and honor code, that keeps everything well tide togheter.

Ofcourse the colonies are far from home and so laws are handled alot more laidback, resulting in gambling prostitution and drugdealing.
But as we all know it creativ people prever it when they dont have to follow strict rules(and can get the substances that make them so creativ easy).
Because of this alot of artists and sientists move over to the colonie.

The empire is perfectly fine with this in the beginning.
But soon enough the colonie wants independence, and that means the empire would loose all the crative, money making class of its country.
Leaving them only with peons politicians and an small group of proud warriors (think samurais).

Now in the small battles that follows, it shows that the warriors of the colonie, use quite some cruel tactics (as they are not bound by the honor system of the empire anymore).
Killing alot of civilians and assorted things.

Uh I stop here but can you simpatize with the Empire this way?
Hm come to think of it I propably use it in someway for my RPG, but still if you want to sniff parts of it be my guest.

Great, wanna make the story with me ?.

The colonials could use all sorts of banned weaponry, bio weapons, living bio gears, and be a right load of bastards, revolting, and 'liberating' imperial worlds in the name of a supposed peace.

The imperial guard, stripped of it's power base and raw recruits, becomes an ultra elite filled with long serving veterans, striking back from the imperial core worlds, liberating them from colonial forces.

But the freedom offered by the colonials is false, they are quickly abused and cast aside for slave labour, building the gears and becoming live components in mindless living bio gears.

Coming in the name of liberation, the colonials are welcomed by all the fringe worlds as conquerors and heroes, untill that is, they are put to work.

The empire crumbles further and is pushed back to the Sol system where they dig in, gathering around them all their finest forces. This is sufficient to hold off the colonials for now.

Liberators, gear drop ships, invisible to lightar strike out at the colonial worlds, the imperial commandos inside have only one mission, to destroy every last trace of colonial rule on the planets they invade but they are outnumbered, and bound by imperial doctrine to never harm the innocent, and to always fight to imperial standards (not cheat).

So basically to sum all this up. The earth is the last fortress world of the empire. From which daring commando missions are launched to take back what once was theirs. The story is centred around the Imperial Black Guard (commandos) the elite of the elite.

Cheers GIAM, I never wouldve thought of that without you. Offer still stands, wanna help ?.

Decided to submit a drawin of the imperial Palladin gear now. It's scruffy but it should give you a feel of the stylistic differences between the modern colonials and the empire. Wanted to wait till I had a clean one, but nevermind.

Palladin middleweight gear.

Woho You just give the guy a little push and he becomes a avalanche .
Love the Background story now!

Oki you wanted input on the Mecha designs right, so some quick doodles.

The first three concern the spidermech idea.

The first stance is what you had drawn. Problem is, this way all the mech mass is located up high.
This way the mech could be easily fall over (I would keep the stance only to move trough hazardous ground, like deep water or to look over a hill).

2. Is how he should be moving (imo).
The mass is low and the legs are spread wide, so the mech can compensate high recoil pretty well.

3. this stance would be the way you park this mech.
The body is almost at ground, this way the pilot can climp out rather simple (try to get out of stance 1).

Overall I would keep the spider aproach as small reckon mechs (as they can manauver in a lot more terain than two legged mechs) or as big weapon platform mechs.

The other sketches illustrate the problem I have about those wheels.

1. ass soon as the mech would accelerate he would fall down, because of inertia.
I think you said he would sunk on them, well not sure how this would look like, but the other sketches are ideas to improve his drivin ability.
Basicly I would give 'em more then two wheels.

I like the imperial design sofar, looks very royal.

and tnx for the offer but I think it is your story.
However post your progress and I will give you my honest opinion (think of me as a beta tester )

As this comment above proves, you know WAY more than me about mecha conceptional design. Your continued mech design assistance will be invaluable. Ill post the finished concepts 2morrow, would appreciate any help you can give me with the bio gears as theyre proving a problem, I dont wanna scrap em, but so far theyre not freaky enough.

Theyre kinda like eva's in that theyre biological components covered with an outer shell, but the brain, and organs are bio electronic (fully fused bio and cyber techs). They have living eyes and can metabolise metal and organic material into energy, as they have a digestive system and big 'ol teeth .

They looked interesting.
Maybe more information on them, how you want them to tie up in the story.

The biogears are the secret weapon of the enemy. Imperial gears have a shield generator as standard but the rebels gears havent, biogears not only generate their own bioelectric shields, they also heal damage like organic tissue with a metabolism thousands of times faster than ours. The rebels were never able to aquire the secrets of shield technology, as the imperials activate a data shredder in their gears at the moment they are beaten. It sets of thousands of tiny charges spread throughout the gear, wrecking the equipment inside, and wipes the gears operating system. The charges arent sufficient to destroy the machine. or kill the pilot, but it renders the gear unexamineable and imperial pilots are conditioned against extreme torture, choosing to die rather than give up their secrets.

the biogears sound good imo, tho remember no secret can be kept forever.
But they work fine as one of the coloniest dirty genetical experiments to win the war.
