First post here so hi to everybody.

I am a long time semi-fan of Manga and Anime and decided this new years eve to get back into drawing and to motivate myself I decided to learn something new: anime

So without further introduction here is my progress so far. The eveolvment up till this pic can be see on http://www.fransgaard.net/projects/anime

wow, thats some nice stuff you got there. You've made a strong start to your drawing, and your colouring is good too. Keep it up, as they say!

Thanks, it is a start at least. I strongly feel that if I first get the eyes right, the rest will follow.

She originally had blackhair but it fell into the star background. But I am currently working on another suitable background because she looks better with black hair

it's a pretty good drawing overall, but I think you need to put at least a little shine in the hair (unless she hasn't washed it in weeks) and clearly draw the neck. Other than that, its a strong start

Shine in the hair, yes you might be right. The yellow hair was a bit of a quick add on.

not sure about the neck though, I wanted the helmet to be pretty clear that's why I left the neck out inside the helmet

I must say the black hair looks a lot better on her, and the background is cool

I agree. The yellow hair was a quick fix, so I am glad I replaced it.

btw, I think I have made a mistake. I thought Anime was comic and Manga Cartoon. Now somebody told me it is the other way around.

In Denmark where I am originally from all japanese cartoon movies are labelled "Manga" that's why I thought the comic books are called Anime.

Can somebody here confirm which is which please?

Manga is the comic/graphic novel format, Anime is short for Animation

The left arm is positioned funny. For it to be behind the body, her torso needs to be turned to the left. And it still looks like her head is floating inside her helmet. You don't really need to draw her neck, but at least give a slight indication that it's there.

first off it is a great pic and my opinion is that the black hair and the background in that pic is really good I like it

Agree, but I am not re-drawing her. But yes you are right. And I still don't think the neck will do it any good. I tried it but it just became very cluttered.

Allright, I liked the new picture, and I hate to constantly criticize people's drawings, but if you really want to learn, you might want to listen. Her shoulders aren't wide enough for her head size, and in conjuction with her shoulders, you need to make her hips wider. I think that her legs are just too long, with her feet being too small (only by a skosh though)

no no Critisize all you want, that's why I posted :-)

Basically you think she should have been more curvy, maybe you are right.

When I did the drawing they look too short compared to the tutorials I have found around, so I actually stretched her legs to be just about the height of her foot longer, but the rest is as I drew it.

if thats the case,then fine, but there is a system of proportioning for drawing these characters. I'll post it when I find it (its probably buried under piles of debris in my lab)

as far as her legs looking too short, I really couldn't say why that would be. How short were they?

They ended where her trouselegs end now, not much difference.

Hey Fransgaard, it's interesting to check out your progress and from what I can see you're going great. I wonder what sort of thing you'll be producing after week 100!

I like the space girl- and prefer the second version- the background looks a little more solid.

As for anime and manga (I was checking out your site ), it's true manga refers to comics, while anime refers to animation, but I believe you're still ok to call your stuff 'anime artwork' since the look of your stuff shows more resemblance to an anime still or freeze frame than page from a manga. Most people that draw this sort of style tend to illustrate single characters rather than sequential manga pages so they have just as much right to call their stuff manga as you do anime! Anime and manga are not only an art format (comic, animation, whatever), but a style in their own right.

Aha, that is new to me... what is the difference between the two?

I'll probably change it to Manga anyway since my secret plan is to end up with a small online comic at the end of the year, but it is only a plan so far.

When drawing this sortta stuff, it doesn't really matter which you call it. But for arguements sake, here in the west Manga is still used to refer to Japanese comics, while anime for Japanese animation.

You need to be able to upload files from your computer to the internet, then link whose files from the forum. The instant UBB code will help when you post. Or to link files, just paste the web url (where they can be found on the net) in a forum post and away you go!

well for first timer very very good only i have 1 problem with you new pic i like how you straed away from the 1/2 chibi girls to normal person it's just the expression on her face does not sutie the situation, But that my opinion so u don't have take me to serios. Just a thought and if posable in your next image i know manga girls are spos to have "bigger" eyes then males well there is very thin line that seperates bigger from a little to big, once agian juft my thoughts i hope this helps can't wait to see your next picture!

Thanks for the advice and I see you point on expression on the drawing you sent me. I'll post it on the site tonight so people can see what you mean.

I thought her eyes couldn't get too big? Maybe it works best on very comic-like characters and not a more lifelike person as her
