Oh man final exams in a week! I'm so dead... hehe anyway I saw the lines for this posted over at CmC for a Coloring contest. I just thought I'd try to do something with it for fun!
I might enter it into the contest, but before I decide, I really need some critiques so I can finish it! Hope I can get some C+Cs!I'd really appreciate it, Thx!
(self-crits: needs some cleaning up, more work needed on wings, more contrast, too many cheap glare thingies)

They're doing a similar colouring contest at the DMB Forums aka Design by Mark forums- similar picture too! Looking really nice so far Ayzie. I like the darker, moody painted style you've gone for with this. Perhaps lose the muscel definition on her leg/shin. Keeping things smooth and round usually looks better with girls.

Hey everyone! thx for the comments. I tried to do something with the wings, but I've failed horribly. It looks messy, and doesn't fit well with the rest of the image.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do with em? Should I continue to do what I did before, and keep the lines? I'm going to surf for some references, and see how it can be handled differently.
Anyway:
Bomu> Thx for the comments! I got rid of the muscle definition like you said, and it looks much better.
Intergalactic> Well, I hope you know what you like or don't like hehe if there's anything you dont' like about what I'm doin, jus gimme a heads up =] thx
metalman> I see what you're saying bout the lineart. I've seen it done before and it really adds a whole new dimension to an image. I'll try it out in a bit and see how it turns out. Thx!

Hmm great work so far but imo you should keep the outlines around the wings, the way you have it right now the wings kinda sink into the bg too much. But as metalman said color the lines (in a darker blue than the rest of the wings).
Also you could add a bit sharper textures to them (similar the way you allready did). Maybe select 3 or 4 different blue shades and draw little elipse's, which are overlapping, on a new layer and blend it with the drawing you allready have (but stay in the lines ).
Another thing I see is that she could need something she is resting on (some energy halfmoon thingy). Or add some airbubbles and flowting debris so it looks like she is in some kind of liquid (with the color selection right now it would give the impression of an unborn angel which i think would quite cool).
hope it helps.

Awesome comments guys! Thanks a bunch.
GiAm> I agree about the wings too. I'll definitely keep the outlines, and try giving it a color other than black. I'll definitely try adding the texture to them too
I didn't really know what I was doing for the background, but sweet suggestions, I'll try them out also! And I love that unborn angel idea =] Thx for the help!
AKATT> Thx! I agree about the wings. I'll be going back a few steps with the wings and try something new.
I'll try to post another update soon! Last day of classes today, and I jus wanna sleep! hehe

Hey all, had some time today, so I worked on the image some more. I tried to do something with the wings, it's better than my second attempt, but it's still pretty "iffy". The feathers don't seem to "flow" well enough.
I tried doing the color thing for the lineart, but I couldn't pull it off, so I decided not to use it. I've seen it effectively before, but I suck too much to really pull it off hehe.
Anyway, I'm close to being done. I hope to jus get some final comments! that'll be great!

Yeah, I can see the improvement with the wings from ver 2. It's looking good. I think the 1st ver wings looked better, 'cos there was some stronger lighting/ more contrast. It you lighten it up - even if it's just those 'sides' of the feather using the selection tool. Also, to define each feather a little more, you could add a small secondary light sorce to add a glow around the edge of each 'object' in the pic. Light will come from the left/bottom. Make sence?

Yup lik this version best so far bomu is right tho some glowing / brighter light would be cool.
Oh and what was your problem the colored lines maybe we can help you a little bit whit it.

Bomu> Thx bomu Yea I agree, the wings in the first image were more sharp and had more contrast. I tried adding darker shadows and lighter highlights on the wings in this update. I also tried the glow thing. I'm not sure if this update is an improvement. The changes might have been a bit off.
GiAm> Thx again, I tried the glow thing, and the results were pretty good. But it looks like my sloppiness took most of the effect away.
The main problem with the colored lines was that I didn't have the patience to go over the lines of the whole thing. The lines got messy too since I still can't control my damn wacom too well.
This is probably gonna be my last update, unless someone points out something that I have missed =] Thanks for the input everyone I really appreciate it! I definitely learned a lot doing this pic.

ah if I unterstood you rightyou made a new layer over the lineart and try'd to draw freehand over it.
try making a mask from the lineart layer (using the brightness value of the image). This way you can only draw on the lines itself(sorry for not being more clear hear but I don't know PS).
if you do it like this it is just a question of the right color.
But your final rendition allready looks realy great you should enter the contest

Yeah, I forgot to mention- To add to what Giam said; colourizing line art shouldn't be too hard. If you're set up right, it should only take about 2 seconds- a few untested methods I can think of to do this are: *Set your paint brush options to 'screen' then colour over locked outline layer. *While on the outline layer, go to Hue/Saturation - check the colourize box nd up the lightness value and select your hue. *Do an out line mask, convert it to a selection, then delete the white; once you're left with the lines locked on a layer, you can easily colour on top (see OM tips section for details on this one). * *Change your brush properties to 'colour' then colour the lines?

Wow, thanks a bunch everyone. I couldn't have finished this without everyone's help.
Bugsy> Thx, i think i will try my luck with the contest =]
GiAm/Bomu> I quickly tried out a couple of those methods, and they worked great! I'll be sure to keep them in mind on my next project. Thanks a lot.
