Ok, not my first piece, I have no intention of ever letting anyone else see that piece. Still virtually the first piece. See it here: http://www.deviantart.com/view/2579256. And I know the background is crap but the character took ages, this CGing lark is harder work than it looked, and I was tired so i just pattern filled

This is awfully good for a -first- cg lol you should've seen mine, its like painting with a brush up your nose funfun.
Im guessing it must of been a little tricky to cg a character in this position, laying down beneath the sun leaves little to shade in.
Why don't you try cel-shading? I've already recommended to two other people in this forum, not sure who they were lol but anyway. Search for any naime/manga tutorial even Julie Dillion's at How to draw manga site and you will find a cel shade tutorial for sure :3
Dont have to, always fun to develope your own colouring technique :3 my slight suggestion would be to bold the outline a little more, you can always use a line tool to draw in the outlines and then add more shadows :3 maybe try to blend the shadows and hilites. *is actually looking at Cats eye pic* X3

that's pretty good for a first attempt. it would looks better if there was more contrast between the dark and light areas, but the pose you've drawn is actaully quite hard to cg since you're looking from where the main light sourse is coming from.

Hehe, I agree! - both that my first CG sucked more than most and Also this a godd 'technically' first CG from Deadlymittens Colouring artwork is like anything tho, the more practice you have, the better you'll get. I've also noticed with several other artists, that you dont necesarily have to be fantastic at drawing to produce good colours!

Wow thanks for the kind words. Here though I'm going to have to confess to my newbieness at CGing as I've heard the term cell shading thrown around a lot but I'm actually still unsure what it actually is!?!

http://www.organicmetal.co.uk/technique/pstools.htm shows an example of Cel CGing and others. Cel style is basically clean cut flat tones (like cartoons) rather than softer blended colours achived with an airbrush tool etc
