ps - I will almost certainly be colouring it as soon as my pc is up and running. Whether that's before the 7th of August deadline... well. It almost certainly won't be. But yeah. I might even attempt a watercolour version. If I have time. Which I won't. Work all day tomorrow, all day saturday, and moving to Bournemouth on monday. -_- hassle.

the butterflies? erm.... well. not sure. I did a couple of pages of concept sketchy first, in my sketchbook - character designs, and a page of butterflies drawn from reference pictures. they all share a very similar shape, and since I was drawing 'em very tiny the actual butterfly shapes (where they merge into the mage woman) were dead easy. What took time was the sheer amount of the bastard things (and I still think it could probably do with way more of them - I was intending a big cloud, and there are way too few...) -_- yeah, and the composition of the butterflies. wanted the bottom of the picture to balance with the top half. not sure if it really works though. There should be swarms of the damn things, rather than quite a lot. -_- meh. Guess I get bored too easily, eh? XD

the whole thing, from initial pencil sketches (probably about half of the total time) right up to the hand inking (which takes me ages cause I get paranoid) took about... erm. five hours? something like that. I'm not exactly sure. I really took my time over it, though, since it's a competition entry.

Sludge over at T4 has offered to colour it, as has Chi, so I'll post them as soon as I see them. I only just emailed Sloo the lines, so. =)

Colourwise, I was thinking the whole thing should be very dark... like, all the butterflies black? or really dark blue... black's difficult to shade... adds to the black magic theme. I mean, you colour colour her in pale greens and yellows and she'd look like a fairly neutral/good druidy type, rather than the evil mage I was going for.

sorry, that was a bit of a massive post, wasn't it? XD didn't mean it to be, just kept thinking of extra things to say and got carried away... XD I natter too much.

As for butterflies being evil, i'd have to disagree. Wasps, now they're evil. But it's the pidgeons you really have to watch, they're planning and waiting to overthrow society. You've seen them, huddled together, watching you and moving away to keep their plans a secret. Showing their contempt for society by shitting all over statues of our forefathers, great leaders and great thinkers. They are our worst enemy, oh yes. And squirrels, don't get me started on squirrels......
