when posting artwork, how can i get the image to open up in the thread instead of just showing a link?
can i do it or does it depend on the hosting site?

You'll have to use UBB code ^^; When you post, you'll see a Instant UBB Code window, pick "Image" and fill in the url of your picture. Note that if your webhost doesn't allow hotlinking, like geocities and whatnot, it won't work and it'll give you a nice beautiful red X.
