sometimes I start with the background. But for the foreground I start out with the flat colours (each colour usually has its own layer, which is a memory killer but ah well), and after that I start doing the shading. If it's softstyle I use the airbrush, startign with a big brush and low opacity, and darkening my colours while I shrink my brush :]

One Thing I want to know is how to take line art and turn it into an overlay (or whatever you call it when the black lines are the only thing on a transparent layer).

I've been trying to do that but can't. Unless I spend hours using the magic want and selecting and cutting little bits out, but that takes longer then going over my work with the point to point line.

At howtodrawmanga.com, there is a really good tutorial on how to do things, but not as in depth as I'de like. I figured out most my coloring techniques from a video game download (some template you could paint stuff off for a car game).

I would send an image so you could get an Idea what I do, but im still a beginner and use a much simpler style of shading.
Maybe somone here can post there work for download, maybe just a small image for example, and then you could see exactly how they layer their images. Using the layer toolbar in PSP (or PS) you could more or less see each step they took to creating the final outcome, from the plain black lines to the finished work.

Keith in PSP there are two ways I know of.

First have your Lineart on his own layer and set it to multiply color layer's are going under it.

Second is a bit more complicated once again lineart on own layer.
Than create a mask out of it (mask/new/from picture).
In the popup following settings:
this window / brightness of source / create mask from opposite values (I hope it isn't too different from your version have to translate them from german.)

After this the white should be gone, now fill the layer with Black
and put all colors under the lineart.

finished.
