Do any of you take Art Classes outside of school?

Do you you even take the art courses that are available your school?
Are they total crap? Or good?

Are you entirely self-taught if you didn't/haven't taken any artcourse or lessons?

I take all the art course available at my school and also a painting class outside of school 'cause anything with color is my weak point.

i m going to take an art class during school i start in september and from this point my life is going to change.
each day exept weekends:
school from 7:00 to 12:30(new time, long story)
then from 1:30 to 2:00 studie then from 2:30 to 5:00 i think art class
on weekends job,studie + ad&d,drawing practice
i know that this was competely unnecessary but i just felt like saying it.in short i m going to art school and yes some school art is whorth it if it s free take a chance.

I've had 2 college-level art classes, basic drawing and life drawing. I think they helped a lot. I learned a lot on my own, but I learned more in a way shorter time through the classes.

Yup I have desided to take a few classes this half year.

Which are akt drawing (allready had one lesson last week and man I suck) basics of drawing (perspective, objects, color... missed first lesson) and portrait(starts this week).

For the question if it will help or if its important well read and understand my sig .

sigh....hate to say this..but ive taken at least one OR two art classes every year since junior high...
and in general..i didnt improve that much in the high skool years...
it DID help..but most of the time it was learning from your mistakes..and what you could have done to improve or whtever

i took 2 years of college art classes in my junior year and then my senior year...TOTAL CRAP!!! ...i did not learn a single thing..it was DO DO DO...WORK WORK WORK...and the people in the class ...jeez they werent very helpful...well..lets just say i had bad high skool years

i had art lessons at school till i was 16 but they didn't really help. i pretty much prefer to learn by watching and imitating and then going off in my own direction.

I used to do GCSE art, but gave it up b4 A-level. Now art is just a spare time thing for me. I taught myself how to draw manga and anime off the internet, from a couple of great sites (hope u don't mind me linking moderators)

Generally you don't really learn alot from most art classes in high school, you just do the work whether it looks good or not and turn it in on time for a grade. I'm planning on taking Illustration when I go to Pierce College in Southern California.Hopefully, I'll can greatly improve my shading and coloring. I took a few art classes, didnt help very much. You can learn alot more on your own all you need is time. Buying or printing out images of anime or western characters you can study them and try to mimic their anatomy and all that stuff.

school practically made me give up art classes. I've only been drawing seriously for about 2 years now. and I started doing an art course last september - I'm gonna do a degree in illustration!
As to whether it helped - well, school etc sucked mighty ass. I hated them, they hated me, we didn't get on, and they certainly didn't help. But college - this foundation art course I'm doing is glorious. Best thing I ever did. They give you plenty of room to be creative, plenty of room to do whatever you please. they just set basic briefs and the rest is up to you.
otherwise, i set my own deadlines and work cause I find it helps. practice in millions of different ways - drawing on the bus, drawing people who don't know they're being drawn, drawing while drunk (etc etc) and get my mates to set me mini-projects. I also did a bit of life-drawing - which is a wikkid and I totally recommend it to anyone.

seriously, drunken-drawing style is MIGHTY! I discovered this in Barcelona after we spent an evening taking advantage of the cheap booze there, inventing our own cocktails (and drinking them!)... then me and Plau were like - YAY! DRAWING! and we drew all the people who had passed out!

I couldn't tell if any of it was any good until the morning after! But it's some of the best work I've ever produced - and it also improved my general drawing skills. Teaches you stuff about observation and relaxing your wrist and stuff...

ALL YOU WHO HAVE NEVER TRIED IT! IT MUST BE DONE!

so, go get drunk! ;)

tz..tz..tz and people wonder why kids dont behave good anymore.

But its true,
Alkohol will shot the side(normaly the left) of the brain first, that hinders you from drawing right.
The border is rather small however.
And remember that the stuff kills brain cells.

I think it helps 'cause you spend less time worrying about what you're drawing, and more time looking at your subject (than you do at the paper) - which is a very good thing.
I found I was relaxed, barely looked at my lines, didn't have time to think "shit, that line's wrong" (plus was too drunk to tell either way), so i just churned 'em out real fast, hardly looking at what I was doing. My hands did the work for me, my eyes were busy looking at my subject, and I needed to concentrate to do just those two things!

if anyone's interested I'll pull 'em out of my space in college, scan 'em and stick 'em up for you guys to see? then you can judge for yourself!
