Topic: EVER WANTED TO QUIT ART?

These last three days, Iv'e been suffering from artblock again, the only thing that would come out right seemed to be mecha. I keep drawing, trying to draw through the block till it went away like I usually do, but this time, it just pissed me off so much. For one day I threw all my art supplies in the bin and said to myself that I was through, that I wouldn't draw again. Within an hour I had fished them all out, determined to not be beaten by my own psyche.Art is the only thing I do well, so I picked up the pencil again, but so many are so much better n me it's depressing. I drew a Spawn I was proud of, only to see someone younger than me draw it as good as Todd, on deviant. Kids of 13 and up can cg better n me, I feel useless right now. I know it's stupid to be competative with my art, but it's at the centre of my sense of self worth, it's the only thing I take pride in and from. I won't quit, no matter how depressed art makes me. My question is, has anyone else wanted to quit this badly and no, I don't feel suicidal, just angry and annoyed that a talent that comes so naturally at times, can also act like a prima donna ?.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with Shirai. When you are in an art block, the last thing you want to do is force yourself to draw - nothing good comes out of it, you only end up with more frustration. For me, the whole imaginative process to drawing is an on and off thing - I have lousy days as well when I can't draw anything. That's the thing, though - inspiration will hit you AT ANY MOMENT. If you can remember what you are inspired to do, then keep it in your memory, and create it when you get home. If you can't remember, write it down somewhere.
Above all, just have fun with your drawings. At the end of the day, you draw, because you enjoy. Don't destroy the enjoyment process. To put it crudely, good drawing is like good sex - it's only wonderful when you enjoy it.

These boys are right, you know - inspiration is not something that can be forced. I usually try and do something different, like read a physics book (O_o) or write music. or watch a random film (my mate chris has about 400 videos and 100 dvds). sometimes, art college-stylee, it's good to work through your ideas in some kinda logical fashion - writing 'em all down and doing random idea sketches (which don't have to be any good).also, I find some of my mates can be real help. Shig (who runs www.shitfink.co.uk ) is a great sounding board, alwayts gives me tons of good ideas, and is good to bounce things off. but as a general rule, don't force it. just mess about with ideas until you think of a new way of looking at it. And don't give up. (Just keep thinking how much you've improved in the last year - for example - and how great it's gonna be in 5 years time if you keep it up!) chin up, dude... it'll get better, wiv time.  Pix_x
