lol this sux, i can do things following tutorials but on my own i cant do much at all. i just cant get my heard around 3d software, it doesnt come naturally as 2d work so im guessing its the way it is.

a mate of mine from college, he cant draw what so ever! but when he got a hold of a 3d software, the guy is a natural at it! not even a week and on his own exploration he could model a bike, swords and stuff lol.

perhaps i should stick to photoshop and painter :3

yeah I know what you mean Shirai allways had the same problem, just seems like 3 dimensions are too much for my brain.

But gonna learn those stuff soon planning on doing a mod with a friend.
And it seems like the whole modelling animation stuff is my job.
Tho not sure with what I gonna work either 3dstudio, Maya PLE, or Blender propably a combination.

hehe and that sure didnt help right , well as soon as I found my way around with these programs (and modelling itself) I'll report in 'k.

I was told that generally, if you're able to understand and draw good 2D, then 3D shouldn't be too hard- just a case of learning the program. Dunno if that's true, since I've never attempted 3D stuff. I wonder how long it would take to get to grips with 3DSMax?

But yeah, I think books are the best way to go unless u know someone personally, who could teach ya.

aw I never got help from someone I know thats willing to tutor me, im stuck with the basic tutorials lol till i can afford 60£ for a book

most online tutorials require you to know more than the basics which can be a pain if your a novice (which I still am) also maya has one too many menu's and I find myself lost in them at times Xp

go to 3dbuzz.com
They provide free downloadable video tutorials on Maya (amongst many other things) which are invaluable. Quite simply the best in the industry, and FREE!!!

They'd be worth paying a lot (and I mean a LOT) of money for, and they provide them for free.

Maya's arch enemy is XSI, but I still prefer Maya as my weapon of choice. I would recommend it over any other 3D application for the time being.

Once you learn how to use one 3D package though, it is not difficult to learn other ones, but the learning curve is always a steep one if you are just getting into it (Depressingly so for some, modeling can be hard, rigging can be nightmarish... animating can be pure fun though). Sadly, not too many people are happy with the Maya 5 upgrade, as for some reason, it had more bugs than the 4.5 version (There was a recent patched that fixed a fair number of the problems, not all though).
