Originally, I had a nice pocket sketchbook, but after a while, the limited size of the paper and the fact that it was grating my hand like a cheese grater really started to grate on my nerves. My personal favorite sketchpad is the full sized one from the company Paperblanks... it's one of those full fledged sketch books with ring binding (It also comes in regular book binding, but having your hand in a mousetrap is almost just as comfortable), and the paper is really high quality and great for rendering and can take an abundance of abuse, but I'm not sure if you can find that type everywhere.... I bought like 10 of them in bulk at a Costco in Canada, and I'm still using them up today.
Anyway, guess the three things to look for are size, paper quality and ring binding, but I'm happy with my bulk sale Paperblank books. Some people like newsprint because it is inexpensive, but personally, I think it causes more problems than worth the price.. anyhoo...
