a friend of mine also draws manga-ish style drawings, and she's good. I'm not good (heheheh) and she's WAYYYYY better than me. I've got no problem with that :-). But lately, I've been putting some of my drawings on the web, making a few birthday cards out of my drawings, and she's got a huge problem with that. If she sees the drawing, she'll critique EVERYTHING she can find about it: "no shoulders" "face is completely screwed up" "the belt doesn't wrap around the waist like it should" "those flowers look tacky" "stupid pose" "why the hell is her hair blue" and it ANNOYS ME even though I've spoken to her about it.

oh well, just needed to say that somewhere.

On a serious side you might want to tell her how you feel about her harsh analysis on your drawing or just not ask her: How does this look? anymore

ColorFool, I think your friend is trying to be helpful, but obviously doesn't realise she's having a negative effect. Or she might have low self esteem so is critisisng your stuff to make her feel worthy?

All I can suggest is you ask her for a little encouragement and positive feedback on your stuff, or just don't show it to her at all. It's cool enough that you're going to the effort to draw personal greetings cards and stuff so as long as you're happy to draw and the person you're drawing the card for or whatnot likes it, do you really need your friend's opinion?

I would listen to your friend, I've always wanted some on to tell me wats wrong with my pictures and say what would be better looking, since I think a public eye has more brains behind it then one persons thought. To this rule there are exceptions ex) well it looks good but the monalisa could really use a bigger smile lets see some teeth) see wat I mean.

wat am getting at be greatfull your friend feels comfotable enough to tell you the truth even tho it may hurt. If any thing let it be your insperation.

Anyway, thanks all. It's actually pretty cool this friend of mine (lets say her name for once, Ally). Ally actually bought Ben's book with me at barnes&noble before she moved to DC, and she had a look at the card on AOL picture share. Ally sometimes makes incrediably useful comments (tri, that's where her honesty comes in handy) especially when she was visiting me in NY a few weeks back. When she saw the card though, and other pictures I had drawn, she critiqued them much more extensively than she would have, and you know, insulted a lot of aspects of the works instead of consructively criticizing them.

Oh well, hopefully she'll get over it. I just won't show her other drawings. They're actually pretty good considering I've only been drawing for about 3 weeks.
