I am not one to know the photo shop but I can suggest sticking with quills/pens with black ink, I always liked thoses ink jobs better then computer done ink jobs, also It's more then likely easier. I would suggest picking up the "Micron Pen Set " it's a great pen set that has tips with all diffrent sizes I am going to be picking up a pack next time I roll on town to the big city.

heres a site witht them on if u wanna get a look at them. http://www.megagear.com/megagear_site/detail.aspx?ID=48

Try looking on the internet, there are loads of tutorials on things like that. I looked briefly but only found ones for inking on painter. its easier with that as at has a really handy rotate function.

I dunno if this helps, but if you fiddle around with the levels and curves (Image --> Adjustments), then that usually helps to make the lines stand out a little more. Otherwise, I can't help you with digital inking. I usually just ink stuff with pens before scanning.

Generally, with cleaning up in photoshop, most people recommend the ridiculously painful to learn Pen tool. I believe that is what you were originally refering too It works great if you have the patience and a high tolerance for failure. The pen tool isn't as hard to learn as it is to get a sense for the way it curves and draws lines... and even still, the similated pressure works like a turd on a stick, so if you're trying to make a drawing that has a lot of line variety, you might be at a loss if you don't double up...

Anyway, here's where my feelings split. I personally ink everything digitally in photoshop and illustrator. I lose out on line control, but I gain in percision, editability and the lines are perfect. Drawing perfect lines with your hand in real life isn't exactly easy to do and if you ink digitally, you can forego a cleaned up drawing on paper, and work straight off the rough, but digital inking takes quite a chunk of time if you are unused to it...

In Photoshop, straight on digital inking is done conventionally by using the Pen Tool on layer, tracing the original sketch on a seperate layer, and using the "Stroke Path" command to make the actual line... Of course, it sounds easy till your first 3 seconds trying to use the Pen Tool... which is like wrestling with a giant snake... Well I hope this helped a little. Still whether to take the digital or physical route is your choice in this matter.

ahhhh the pen tool. I know it well. I do prefer as well inking on paper, then scanning and ajusting. But if you simply must use the pen there are two ways to do so. (at leaste that I know of)
1 Do not click and drag, just click. one short click, then move to the next point and click again and so on. after you have the points of the lines where you want them click the right mouse button and a menu will pop up. choose fill stroke (not path) Use the paint brush from the list that is offered and keep in mind that the thickness of the line is predetermined by the selection you make on the paint brush tool. This will create a straight line from point to point that you previously clicked. so the closer the points the smoother it will appear. especially when you zoom out.
2.) the second way is the click and drag thingy that will give you perfect curves from point to point. This will take some work to get used to. When I do this I use only 2 points in the entire piece. after making the points and giving a little drag with each one i Click the White Arrow in the tools to control them. this allows you to control the curves and fill the path, and also let's you move the points to the next location when you are ready for the next part.
Go to search on your computer and type in the following. "Al Mackey's Tutorials" find that web site and it will show you some basics on this subject.
Just monkey around with the pen tool and it will come to you in time on how it works.
However, even though I can use this tool with ease, I agree with my fellow artist that prefer inking by hand before scanning.
I hope that this does help you and the site I mentioned as well.
The pen is a powerful tool once learned but not just for inking. Placing those same vector point and filling the path with the airbrush is an awsome effect for shading and highliting your piece.

I tried inking via Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool and I had to give up. Adding and subtracting nodes and getting the curves to bend the right way was so frustrating! I may give it another go at some stage but inking digitally - the vector way isn't easy. Lacking familiarity with Illustrator also doesn't help.

Unless I have to learn it, for now, I'll stick to traditional ink pens. Inking by hand also helps practice general art skills like hand-eye coordination.

you can remove the clouds fairly easily with the dodge tool. alternatively (if the lineart is much darker) you can adjust the brightness till the clouds go away, and then increase the contrast and/or use the levels option and increase the first of the three number/settings options.

mostly though, I find the pen tool unbearable, and concur with bomu's views. and the way to excel is definately the much more impossibly hard paintbrush way
