Hahhahaa

Illustrator used to have the rivals FreeHand by Macromedia and XaraX (oh and Corel Draw, wonder if that and XaraX are related), but eh, it seems that they left them in the dust a few years ago.

In the olden computer days, there were the two application types Paint and Draw, respectively raster and vector based graphicapps... so what Photoshop and Illustrator are the evolved versions of those two basic functions. Of course, saying that is one thing, learning both of them is another... Best way to explain Vector of course, is playing a game of "Connect the Dots".

Illustrator has a lot of applications, but anime artists (There's only like 2 I know who use Illustrator regularly) usually rely on it for clean line work instead of full on coloring.

Fireworks is great if you are into designing web graphics. As it stands, I have very little experience with Fireworks, but I've seen it do some impressive stuff without resorting to complete Flash integration. It's main ability is it's versatility in arranging images freely before exporting without having to slice and dice larger images to shreds manually which used to be pretty common place among HTML web design, not to mention a royal headache... It's not something you'd get into if you weren't doing web material, but if you are, it should benefit greatly... with a name like Fireworks, it's kinda' hard to figure out what it does by the name alone, but I have some friends who are loyal supporters of it and use it regularly.

Freehand is of course, Illustrator's main competition, but basically, if you learn to use one, then you shouldn't have a hard time learning to use the other. Freehand hasn't had much spotlight on it though in recent years as it used to.
