I have been trying to get my hands on a legal copy of photoshop but im stuck with Photoshop 2.0 elements. does this mean i cant cgproperly or is there still a way to do it.

well wat I'd do is go pic up a magazine copy of "pc world" or something, they sometimes hand out old copies of photo shop, then u could buy the photo shop upgrade 4 like 180$ instead of 900$, that's wat am doing proubly. or u know u got get Lime wire and download it, but that's not leagal, tho i've never got in trouble 4 doing it. eh wat ever u like i spos.

Photoshop Elements 2.0 is already a stripped down version of Photoshop to begin with, so pretty much anything regular Photoshop 6 and after will be better to use (There was a huge improvement between 5 and 6). Outdated software sells for quite the discount these days, so you may be lucky in finding it used or in the bargain bin.

Hmmm... there might also be another option... since you have the legal version of Photoshop Elements 2.0, you may be able to straight upgrade to Photoshop CS. I've heard of people doing it (That and upgrading from an older version of regular Photoshop) but I'm unsure of the details... might be worth e-mailing Adobe directly about. PS CS costs something like $649 American, so anyway to slash the price is worth looking into... well, you can also get it for a discount when you buy the full Adobe Creative Suite, but that's like buying the store when all you want is a sack of potatoes.

I know you guys are trying to help but you still havent answered my question, can i still cg on such an old program or are there new tools that you MUST HAVE.

As far as I know, you can cg perfectly fine in Photoshop Elements. Elements is a tuned-down and "domesticated" version of the normal photoshop, so it lacks quite some features.
Working in a simpler edition might be a good thing now and then. That way you actually learn to shade properly, instead of trying to replace skill by tools, filters and plugins.

I 2nd that!

u don't even need photoshop 2 CG, if u want u could use Ms paint. it would take way longer but u could still CG. It all depends on how much effort/time ur willing to put in.

im not so sure how far one can go with mspaint, customisable brushes are pretty important in cging well. can just about cell shade in mspaint though I suppose, but layers are also a pretty important feature. Photoshop elements has both of those things though, so theres no reason why one cant cg things on that.

In agreement of the fine people above, if nobody ever could have used Photoshop Elements and outdated versions of Photoshop for practical applications, Adobe probably would have never been released them in the first place

A skilled artist can do miracles with a basic program like MS Paint, but that's like cooking with a match when you could use an oven. Then again, some artists still use the most primitive drawing tool on the planet (Charcoal) and achieve awesome results.

I'd have to say the single most revolutionizing feature to come into graphic apps, short of color, has definitely got to be layers. If Photoshop Elements 2.0 has layers (Never used the Elements series, so I'm not sure), then you should be able to carry out work quite normally.

If you are looking for a free open source graphics app program, then I recommend GIMP... although I haven't used it, I've heard good things about it as an alternative to Photoshop, but it's not quite as user friendly and a bit of a black horse.

Thank you all very much thats exactly what i wanted to know. I am willing to put in the time and the effort even if it does take a bit longer.

P.S. What exactly is it that the newer versions of phtotshop allow you to do that the others don't.

The substantial features on PS CS are a bit more expert oriented, but are great things if you have already reached the corner of previous PS versions and back and want more. CS also became standardized into the Creative Suite line (Before that, version numbers of Adobe's products were just floating around out of sync) and all of the progams are much more integratable. In anycase though, read the link for further info

Well, I'm stuck with Photoshop 5.0 LE and I figured a way to get around it's overly crappy interface an user-unfirendly tools, *sigh*, the good days... BLA and nice grammar Tri.
