Here is a list of publishers (Small and large) in the UK who are either likely to be looking for artists/ writers or might be willing to publish your comics. Some will pay you- but most are Small Press. Still- it's nice to see your name in print and tearsheets are real good for the Portfolio!

PaperTiger
The Girly Comic
Violent (FactorFiction)
Fusion (Engine Comics)
Alan Grant & "Wasted" magazine
Wolfman comics (Irish-may pay you in euros )
Underfire Comics
ZarJazz (edited by the dude from Underfire)
Smallzone ( Distributes at all the major cons, in Case you've self Published)
TopShelf ( Chris Staros is a nice man.)
2000 AD (bla bla bla)
Com-X (...has died? dunno on this one.)
AP Comics (They were real rude to me!)
Zip Gun comics
Publishing houses that are receptive to comics:
David Fickling Books
Harpercollins

will update with more links later
Hope this is some help to the Brits of the board.

Going to lots of conventions and getting mind-numbingly drunk.-untill someone offers me a job. No, really.

At the bar after the convention. That's where the contacts are made.

Ayacon? My housemate was supposed to go to that, but apparently he didn't have proper ID or something. Needless to say, he was rather annoyed about that, but at least he was refunded.

Hey, thanks for the info. It's always good to keep abreast of publication opportunities.

Is anybody going down to the Brighton Expo in November? I'm working up a few pages with a writer friend of mine and we're hoping to generate some interest. We're going to need a publisher willing to take a few risks though, do you know if any of those on the list have a rep for taking on edgy work?

yup. And I know who'll be there too.
mmkay, Underfire are pretty violent underground action comics, FactorFiction publish a book called "violent" which is (as the name suggests) pretty uncenscored. These are compliations though- so If it's a short story, then that's the way to go. If you're thinking of self-publishing a longer story, Smallzone is where to go. They'll print and (best of all) distribute your book at pretty much every UK con. You'll have to pay for the printing though- but at least you'll be dealing with a printer who knows about comics. Wolfman too, would be a good choice. Really all the underground publishers are receptive to offbeat or dodgy stuff. The more glossy mainstream ones (ComX, AP etc) are much harder to break. They'll all be at the Brighton Expo though, and i'd advise waving your pitch under everyone's noses. You might as well, after all. I'll be there, propping up the bar, So if you're having problems then look for the drunken black guy with dreadlocks and i'll point you towards some folks i know.
most of the small pressers won't pay you- but if your work's good enough, you can use the publication to press into the hands of the big shots. It makes your work that much more acceptable. It's hard to really advise without seeing your pitch.. just show it to everyone, and, if you're anything like me, you'll eventually get reeealy good at dealing with rejection

Thanks again, that's given me some food for thought.

I think I may need to talk my friend into doing something different for this particular expo outing. We've been working on the archetypal 'Big Idea' but realistically it's not got a hope of being published as a first work. The story arcs that we've got are gonna take a fair run to do the thing justice and nobody is gonna pick up a couple of unknowns and give them that sort of free licence.

I'll hopefully convince him to work up a script for a one-shot that we can use to get our names and faces known while we polish up the other story.

Anyway whatever we end up taking I'll keep my eyes peeled for ya at that bar; be good to get your opinion.

Sorry Slumdog, Must'a Missed you. Brighton Con was hectic, and hangover infused. Hope you enjoyed it, all the same, and got some good feedback!
