Well, let's see if i can help on this (metrical = syllable structure - ie number of syllables per line): Sonnets - 14 lines, usually devoted to love (Shakespearean ones anyway) Limericks - supposedly funny 5 line poems, which I've completely forgotten the metrical structure of Ballads - VERY long pieces, usually a story (hate these - I have to remember long poems for my English Lit A Level --> DAMN YOU AQA!!!) Haiku - short, 3 line poem. Again, follow an exact metrical structure, which I have, in all my wisdom, completely forgotten once again. Hope that's of some use.
