Would you consider yourself to be a serious anime fan or just a guy/girl that likes anime, but not to an obsession state? I would consider myself to be a serious fan who obsesses over it whenever possible.

well no one can call themself a obsessiv fan when he hasnt seen true japanese Otakus.

but I was pretty serious about anime back in the days when it wasn't so big over here.

when you had to suffer for your fix of anime.
When being a anime fan meant to get up at 5 o'clock in the morning(what you gonna do), on weekends.
To watch Sailormoon on a state channel and after this you switch to a turkish channel, to watch wedding peach with turkish voice overs.

thats hardcore I tell you .

but latly it toned down a lot.
The market is alot bigger now and there is to much to choose from.

So I try to keep track of one or two manga series and watch something when my sparetime and the broadcasting time match up.

Yeah you're probably right about that... Well excluding Japanese otakus does anyone consider themself to be a serious anime fan for where they live? I constantly have anime downloading cause I'm a cheapo! I just play video games in the time that I'm waiting for them to finish.

Who'd want to be an otaku tho?
I know about being an Otaku and how it's constude as a bad thing. I recall wathing a TV programme several years ago which explaining this a little. An Otaku is an unofficial word given to an obsessive- it doesn't have to be anime/manga but in all sorts of hobbies.
You can understand that being an obsessive isn't a good thing. It's usually referred to those who spend all there time and energy on one thing, who eat, sleep and breath it. I don't think many people can be classed as Otaku because it's really about being a hardcore fanatic. it doesn't include a 'liker' of anime, only the real 'Train Spotters'. Such fanatics are shunned by most of society because of their unhealthy infatuations, even fellow fans usually disagree with them because they're seen as 'know it alls' and are generally sad.
So, do you still want to be an Otaku? ^__^

Heh, dispite this I've used the term for myself on odd occasions simply because its implications aren't the same in the West. It's not seen as an 'evil' obsessive, just a term for a intermediate/expert fan without the same connotations as in Japan.

But these days, I'm just your average fan. Within the small anime con circles etc I'm a novice in some respects (every fan will specilize in different areas), as far as the rest of the country goes, I'm quite knowledgeable!

I consider myself an otaku because my love for anime is so great. I do spend time doing other stuff... sometimes. My friends shun anime because I watch it so much. they think I need to get out more and always talk to me in a mad tone if I say I was watching anime. It's annoying. I can't even talk about my interests with them... they just insult me. sigh...

yeah nothing wrong with calling himself otaku in the west.
Just keep in mind not to do it when you stand in the middle of tokyo .

Yeah I can picture it now. You yell out your extreme love for anime by calling yourself an otaku and everyone backs away from you and looks at you strange. lol. That'd be pretty funny.

I could bet im the least knowledgable about anime on this board. Somtimes people will make jokes, qoutes, or allude to a character from an anime and I have no clue what the hell is going on.

I really preffer the style of anime compared to western cartoons. I was really intrigued about it even before I even knew where this style of art came from (until I seen it reffered to as 'japanimation'). I remember watching Vampire Hunter D on TBS at like 2 am and thinking that was the coolest cartoon ever (TBS used to play 'Heavy Metal', Vampire Hunter D, then 'Robot Circus' really late at night, more morning.)

I havent seen any real anime in a long time, by that I mean more adult oriented anime. Gundam Wing has great animation but it's so stupid I can't even watch it anymore. Other than that there's just kiddie shows like Salior moon and digimon. Good art but it just feels weird a 20 year old watching that crap?

I'm not really an anime fan at all, there's a lot of really great artists in the field that I like....even though I don't know their names...
There is a few animes that I have found cool, but usually I don't watch it. Pokemon and Sailer Moon ruined it! DAMN THEM!!! DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL!!

Ya know what sucks now is here in the states anime is almost like a big cash-in thing!
I mean one station has an entire Saturday morning devoted to Ultraman, that pink-wrestler thing, and some damn food creature pokemon wanna-be....
I mean i know this is for kids but damn it really kills the spirit of it. Mostly i dont think its these shows themselves but what the writers DO to the shows that makes me mad.. for example the same station ran a series last year called Moncole Knights. It was weird like a combo of monsters and a card playing game. what made the show ridiculous is how much non-sensical stuff that came flying out their lip flaps!! It reminds me of Popeye and his Teret(sp?) syndrome. I hope you guys know what im talking about sorry i cant explain it better. Whats worse is i think ive gotten less intersted in anime as time has gone on because everyone and thier brother is cashing in selling Dragon Ball this and Pokemon that.
It just sucks at least no one can screw with Giant Robo or Macross plus or anything Miyazaki!!

I guess this makes me more of an otaku than most here... cool. I'm into a lot of the stuff the U.S. distributors don't dub or sub. Most of the stuff I watch these days is fansubs. I love 'em. they're free!
Chobits, Kanon, and Onegai Sensei are some of my favorites. They are all really good and definitely worth checking out if you can find them on Ebay.

I am pretty BIG anime fan, I watch atleast one form of anime everyday, I draw constantly and alot of than is in an anime style. I have a huge collection of anime on DVD and VHS, I tape anime even if I don't like the series or movie much, thats how much of a fan I am. This may sound very sad, occassionally when I go out to my alternative nightclubs I have to make it back in time for 2:30 just to tape anime! Do I need help?

I used to be a moderate fan. Now I only watch the odd one here and there apart from Beebop and Outlaw Star. Medabots would be good if it werent so gay and the characters werent so badly drawn. Digimon series three refuses to go any further. Sky show it again and again and again.

Id love it if they werent voiced over in such a queer fashion by Americans. No offense to Americans you understand. They use such wierd, spasticated voices, they arent cartoons so why do they insist on goofy voices?.

Id love to see one like young guns, remember that film?. Without queer voices and with some serious gunfightin. Minus the part where they all die but Billy. I know I said I dislike westerns but theyre starting to grow on me.

Failing that a mad max, road warrior type story bout a nutter and his super car.

Sorry have I gone off topic....

There are alot like Mad Max, post apocalyptic (what the hell does that mean, apocalypse means the end of the world, so how could anything exist after, or would that be pro apocalyptic, my head hurts.) Anyway as I was saying, plenty are Mad Max style, like fist of the north star, same sort of setting. Good idea about the western, haven't seen a western style manga, don't know if one exists. Cowboy Bebop has a sort of western influence.

I guess I'm just a casual anime fan. I watch some every now and then. And yes, I'm sick of all the overkill over here in the states. It seems like every channel has its own lame version of "anime" for the kids to enjoy...I remember the sci-fi channel used to show anime on Saturdays but that was a while back. My brother is a pretty big anime fan though, so maybe I'll bug him to lend me some of his collection

lol... hmmm lemme think. Akira obviously, Ninja Scroll is one of my favourites, Ghots in the Shell, Roujin Z is very funny the animation isn't topnotch, but that doesn't always matter. Hmmm the same goes for Project A'ko thats very funny, some cool action too. And of course one of the greats 3x3 eyes! Ill post more if I can think of any.

But If you want violence I could suggest MD Geist director cut and MD Geist 2.
