War games. Whatever happened to the good ones. Battle Engine Aquila is a good example of what the modern wargame has come down to. Limited sorties of about five to ten mins tops, riddled with time concious objectives that annoy rather than amuse. And is it just my imagination, that the friendly forces are always incapable of lookin after themselves and are dumb as posts. You may very well be flying/riding the most advanced mech thingy, but wars arent won by the fanciest dohickey, theyre won by forces fighting as one. Campaigns are simplistic, protect this, kill these. Whatever happened to recon missions and real rescues. Add to all this, the fact that on most games, the enemy force consists of about 10+ units, rather than thousands.

Why do they never have an open ended campaign anymore, where you support what you like, pitch in where you want to and generally, realistically support the allies, instead of, mission directives like watch these bombers, which are promptly gang raped by fighters (who are usually much smarter than yours). And then when they go down, mission failed. Why cant we have a game where the enemy and allies fight each other on a huge campaign and you are dropped in to support where you feel it's needed. and the battle will continue regardless of losses. Id kill to see a mech game like that. Especially on X-Box with yummy graphics.

This kind of pitch in where you like gameplay, coupled with a squad of men under your command, who CAN do things for themselves when you send them off to defend/attack something would make for a classic game. Maybe games companies nowadays think we're all too stupid to actually control realistic war games. This, youre all stupid mentality is present in so many games these days. Maybe they think that the people who buy the games have only a ten second attention span, but most serious gamers are adults, kids only rent games, and most adults have a reasonable attention span IMO.

And while im on the subject. All FPS games are downright stale now too. Endless copies of the same old shite. Why do these games NEVER have squad support, where you go in as a unit, not as a lone gunman who spends most of the game on his todd, shooting the same old half assed halfwitts again and again.

Make a modern version of X-Com is what I say. The best damn squad game EVER since forever.

This isnt a jounal entry that is connected with Iraq, it just happens to be at the same time so don't go flamin me, this has nothing to do with it.

I had hoped people were as pissed off as me at the war games genre. Pity that, might have made an interesting topic.

Well what can I say in my opinion both the RTS and the FPS genres are clearly PC field (like 2d 3d beatem ups are better on console).

I'm not that much into RTS myself tho, but I played "Shogun Total War" by a friend and it definitv has nice features.
While your units controlling wise are packed in groups every single soldier is displayed. the Limit is at 1500 troops as far as I remember.
So the battles are pretty cool when you have 3000 moving units on screen.

As for the FPS genre, well I agree companys seem to play save and only try to top each other with good grafix.
But thats also the fault of the players, they dont go "uh look the game is supposed to have AI that not only attacks, but surrenders aswell", no they go "Hey seen the video of doom 3 real shadows and everything looks so real that game will rock".

But for good gameplay I give you a tip check out some mods, especial halflife mods there a very good games out there (and I dont mean Counterstrike).

And from your rambling I think you will like Natural Selection(its abit like aliens or starshiptroopers setting wise).
While the mission objectivs are pretty simple (kill the enemy), the idea is great.

The marines are forced to work as a team (one marine doesnt stand a chance against a alien).
One player actually acts as a commander and plays the game like a RTS.
He manages resources builds sentry guns and gives ammunition and weapons to the squad.

and there are other cool mods aswell.

Sounds cool. Where do I get this natural selection ?, or isn't it an HL mod ?.

I was mostly referring to pc, AI nowadays is garbage.

I dont understand this graphics over gameplay fad there is nowadays. To me, the graphics on Unreal Tournamebt or HL are just fine. Games developers work so long on this new fangled, new age, state of the art graphics engine, and forget that the GAME is the most important bit. I dont care how many pixels can be displayed at once, anti-aliasing, dynamic lighting, all I want is a GAME. Look at X-Com, awful graphics, but it's the best damn game ever made IMO. Graphics do not make a game apart from DOA Volleyball, then Im quite happy with the yummy graphics lol . I just hope Yager isn't as washed out and simplistic as Aquila. Im lookin 4ward to playin that.

Natural Selection Site

Well good gameplay takes alot of work and thought.

I think the main problem is the rapid hardware advancement.

Take consoles for example the first games that come out for a console dont use all the hardware of the machine.
Because it takes time for the programmers to learn all the little tweaks tricks and workarounds to use the full potential.

Thats why later games can still make you say "wau!"

On PCs on the other hand, hardware is allways in the move.
So programmers have a hard time to keep up.

And to close all this.
The cool thing about Halflife and its mods is, that it generated a stillstanding environment, where creators have the time to push the engine limits in all aspects.

Yeah that's strange indeed. I even know people with a Geforce 2 running on XP o_O;

Personally I'm not really a fan of war games. Hardly any games manage to interest me lately :/

It wasnt compatible in some sense, I know Gforce 2 works though, my local shop has shut down tho, so it means going to Leeds and being overcharged by some pillock-esque pc-world style store. I don't like those money grabbin bullshit stores.

There are some good games coming out, but as Neo aptly put it, they are all copies of the last program. Just extra grapics on the top of the same old game styles. Only a few games managed to capture my imagination the way Deus Ex and Black and White did.

Plus it takes a hefty system, which most ppl havn't got (like for UT2003) to run most of these new games. I'd spend the money instead on more manga comics instead.

I for one have gone retro because of all this nonsense, and as a result, Mr.Do, Pacman and Nebulous Bee now have me in their clutches! Beep! boop!

The old games got it right the first time!

Ezekiel 25:17

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I feel no remorse for the game designers, it was no easier for the frontiers game makeing, so I think the new generation is just lazy. But that's just my "humble opinion"

I did tho really enjoy Halo, it had I nice twist. Am for by B-day I get Halo 2! And counter strike ain't bad. another war game I've been enjoying is "Star Wars Battle Front" The reason is because you get to relive battles that you've seen on the movies, but this time u get battle in them a decide who wins, good, evil or renagade it all depends one who's da man/female i've seen some killer female computer players so beware.
