Anyone who considers buying a console day of release has to have a long, hard look at what's on offer. It is always best to wait, especially when entering a market with hefty competition. Wait to see which one offers what you want - the big companies will promise you the moon before release day to get you to part with your cash, then seldom deliver for anything up to 12 months after the console has been on sale, if at all. (DreamArena? PlayOnline in the UK? Hmmm?)Take for example the Nintendo DS and the PSP as a recent example. The DS came out the end of March. It was a stunning bit of kit, and being Nintendo, has the jeu de vivre you can expect from any Nintendo machine. However, here we are, post-PSP launch, and the DS is only just starting to bolster up its title line-up. The PSP had more games day of release than the DS had after six months. I mean, Mario Kart is only just here, and where the hell is the awesome Metroid game we were promised?? GAHHH! Mind you, all those fools who waited for a PSP were sorely disappointed by slipping release dates, lack of units, crappy battery life and stupid loading times. Not to mention the rip-off price point of their UMD movies. The DS wins in terms of machine quality, but as always, lacks the sheer volume of software available. So what's the moral of this tale? Always best to wait for 6 months to a year before flashing the cash. By then, you know which console is for you. And you don't get stuck with a gaming turkey for Christmas.
