"No religion is blameless, not on that front."Then i don't know why you brought it up. And technicly Buddhism is more a Philosphy than a religon. Neo, you hit it spot on. The thing is, humans arne't perfect. If we where, we wouldn't need God then would we? quote: It is however, not religion that is to blame, it's those who interprit it to suit them. Many additions and such have been added to the bible and other holy texts by 'prophets''saints'. Who's to say they had their god's best interest at heart instead of their own ?. The world is full of people who all want it to spin the way that suits them. Most will go with the flow and take circumstance as it comes, but some will do anything to twist it to their will, faith is not an issue for a man who knows what he preaches is nonsense, neither is divine retribution.
Texts being added would be Catholism, and im not a Cathloic. Im a non-denominatiol Christian, whihc basicly means i follow what the Bible says, and have more of a personal relationship with God than a religon.

I'll thank you to note, PS, that I didn't bring up that aspect of the argument at all. I wasn't the one who started talking about terrorism and killing in the name of religion, I was simply making a point about violence and religion, and how they're often connected.and I don't think you can claim "technically" buddhism is a philosophy - I mean, on what technical grounds do you claim that, exactly? Buddhism is one of the major religions! It may contain a lot of philosophical knowledge, but don't confuse your humanities here, it's a religion, and widely accepted as one. You try tell buddhist monks in Japan that they're not following a religion, see how far that gets you. Besides, it's irrelevant to the argument which it is. Perhaps because it contains philosophy rather than "rules" and "teachings" - that's why it's not oppresive like so many other religions? And just because human beings aren't perfect, doesn't mean we DO need god. In fact, I'd argue that the very fact that we're imperfect means we DON'T need god. God's a safety net - accept him and you're saved, no matter how imperfect you are. You don't need to worry if you make a mistake, do you? It'll all be okay, so long as you get down on your knees and worship him. :/ However, reject god, and spend your life attempting to improve yourself, learn, develop and become more perfect, and you have only yourself to live up to, and no god to save you if things go wrong. Failure is character building. And to be on your own, scary, but ultimately worth it. Thus, you attempt to become more perfect through your own desires and motivations, not because god tells you to. I object to people telling me what to do and how to live my life. I'm an adult, and I have a mind of my own, thank you - I'm perfectly capable of deciding how to live my life all by myself, and I don't need the bible to hold my hand. You could compare the bible and god to the nanny state (what we're ruled by, plebs. XD) - a state which doesn't tell you why, only tells you "yes" or "no". You may not smoke ganja, or we will arrest you. Why? Because we say so. Fuck right off with that nonsense. It blinkers you. [ 04-09-2003: Message edited by: Pixie Nim ]

The word "religion" implies a god. Buddhism has no god. So Buddhism is not a religion. Da-dah! BTW. Hello everyone. zim [ 04-09-2003: Message edited by: zim ]

The definition of religion is: quote: 1)Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. 2)A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship. 3)The life or condition of a person in a religious order. 4)A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader. 5)A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.
Look at number 4, what do you think the Buddha was? A spiritual leader. Also, there is a supernatural power in the universe - the power of reincarnation and karma, which all Buddhists believe energises the whole of existence - essentially, this was the creating power of the universe. I may be wrong on this note, I'm not too familiar with it, but number 4 certainly applies. So, to end, Buddhism is a religion, like any other, if the definitions laid out apply. Oh, and zim? Welcome to the board. One piece of advice though - I wouldn't base all answers on pure implication if I were you. Might end up getting u stuck in a place you can't get out of...
